luke douglas | a birth story
I will never forget the day I became a mother. The excitement and anticipation, the joy and love. Almost seven months later I still don’t have the words to describe that day. All I can say is that it was the best day of my life.It all started on Friday night around 11PM. Out of nowhere I felt weird and then a few seconds later my water broke. At almost a week over due, baby boy was finally ready to make his appearance!
As we loaded ourselves into the car, I called our families to let them know that baby was officially on his way. We drove to the hospital and were admitted to Labour & Delivery that night. My sister Emily arrived the next morning to keep us company and offer me support. I spent the entire day labouring, working hard for my baby boy. After a long day of little to no progress, at around 9:30pm, the doctor recommended I have a c-section. Baby boy was just too big and this was the safest route.
Less than 5 minutes after I signed the consent forms, I was being wheeled, alone, into the operating room. I’ve never been more scared in my life. After what felt like forever (but was actually only a few minutes), Curtis walked into the O.R. I was so relieved to see him. Luke Douglas was born at 10:02pm, weighing in at 9lbs 10oz and 22 inches long. With a full head of dark hear, a button nose and big blue eyes, he was absolutely perfect. I started to cry as soon as I saw him.
The doctors cut the cord, weighed him and cleaned him up, then wrapped him up and brought him over to Curtis. It was surreal to see my husband holding our son in his arms. Our son. Nearly 45 minutes later, my surgery was over and I was wheeled into the recovery room. I would finally get to hold my son.
He was finally here. And he’s ours forever. How did I get so lucky?
